History
The Old Idaho Penitentiary is a historic prison that operated from 1872 to 1973. The prison was initially constructed as a territorial prison and housed some of the most notorious criminals in the region. Over its 101 years of operation, it witnessed significant changes in Idaho’s growth and development.
During its existence, the Old Idaho Penitentiary saw numerous escape attempts, riots, and innovations in how inmates were treated. Today, it serves as a museum and historical site, providing visitors with a glimpse into Idaho’s criminal justice history.
