History
The Hotel Monteleone has been a fixture of New Orleans’ hospitality industry for over a century.
Established in 1886 by Antonio Monteleone, the hotel originally had only 64 rooms. Over the years, it underwent several expansions and renovations, eventually becoming a luxurious and renowned establishment.
The Carousel Bar, a rotating bar that was installed in 1949, has since become a symbol of the hotel. The Hotel Monteleone has played host to many notable guests, including authors like Ernest Hemingway and William Faulkner, making it a literary and cultural landmark in New Orleans.
Haunted History
The Hotel Monteleone has gained a reputation as one of the most haunted hotels in New Orleans. There are many stories surrounding the hotel, contributing to its paranormal reputation. One of the legends is Maurice Begere, a former hotel employee who is said to still roam the halls. According to the story, Maurice never checked out of the hotel and continues to assist guests to this day. Guests and staff have reported seeing his friendly apparition and have even experienced the sensation of an unseen presence helping them.
Another ghostly figure rumored to inhabit the hotel is that of a young girl named “Adele.” It is said that she was a guest at the hotel who passed away in the early 20th century. Guests have reported encountering a childlike presence, hearing laughter, and even witnessing the image of a young girl playing in the hallways.
There are also reports of unexplained cold spots, elevators moving on their own, and music coming from the Carousel Bar have added to the hotel’s haunted allure.
