History

The Alex Johnson Hotel in Rapid City, South Dakota opened in 1928, and was mamed after its founder, Alex Carlton Johnson. The hotel was initially built to cater to the increasing number of tourists and business travelers arriving in the Black Hills region due to the growig mining and timber industries.

The hotel has undergone several renovations and changes in ownership over the years, adapting to evolving hospitality standards. The hotel was added to the National Register of Historic Places in the 1970s. In 2018, the Alex Johnson Hotel joined the Curio Collection by Hilton.

Haunted History

The Alex Johnson Hotel in Rapid City has gained a reputation for being haunted, with various stories circulating about paranormal activity within its walls. One of the most well-known legends involves the spirit of a former chambermaid named “Lady in White.” According to local lore, she fell to her death from the eighth floor of the hotel in the 1970s. Guests and staff members have reported sightings of a ghostly figure in a white dress on the eighth floor and in the hotel’s hallways. These accounts have contributed to the hotel’s reputation as one of the most haunted places in South Dakota.

Several paranormal investigation teams have explored the Alex Johnson Hotel, documenting their experiences and encounters. The Ghost Adventures crew featured the hotel in an episode of their television series. The episode aired in 2009.
